Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous links to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the club board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
