The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
